The eMonitoring Project

Placement information

We would welcome applications from student volunteers with psychology and computer science / mathematics backgrounds. We have a limited number of placements that we can accommodate but we would like to hear from highly driven students with an interest in this project. These are voluntary (unpaid) placements and students usually come from undergraduate courses that require work placements.

Students with a psychology background will learn about affective disorders (depressive and manic-depressive illnesses – also called unipolar and bipolar disorders), semi-structured clinical diagnostic assessments, and the application of Information Technology in mental health. They will also be exposed to a unique prospective design and may learn how to analyse time-series data. There will be the possibility to write a supervised project based on the data collected from this trial or conduct a study using the electronic mood diaries available to us with “healthy” controls (eg. student volunteers).

Students with a computer science (software & hardware) or mathematics background will have the opportunity to see how new technologies can be applied to mental health problems, and may also be given the opportunity to conduct their own study or develop any new applications that may fit within the project’s scope. Students with interests in usability research, Bayesian/Neural networks, ubiquitus computing, C++ and Java programming are particularly welcome.

Students with a communications / media / sociology / social anthropology backgrounds will have the opportunity to learn about the communication with participants with mental health problems and will have the opportunity to develop an online community (web-forum for the current or future participants) and also assist with the preparation of mood charts and newsletters to keep the participants informed about their progress in the study.
