Commitment to Privacy

The appropriate collection, use and disclosure of patients’ personal health information is fundamental to our day-to-day operations and to patient care.

Protecting the privacy and the confidentiality of patient personal information is important to the psychologists, psychiatrists and staff at

We strive to provide our patients with excellent medical care and service. Every member of must abide by our commitment to privacy in the handling of personal information. This policy was last modified on 23/08/18.

Applicability of This Privacy Policy

Our Privacy Policy attests to our commitment to privacy and demonstrates the ways we ensure that patient privacy is protected. Our Privacy Policy applies to the personal health information of all our patients that is in our possession and control.

What is Personal Health Information?

Personal health information means identifying information about an individual relating to their physical or mental health (including medical history), the providing of health care to the individual, payments or eligibility for health care, organ and tissue donation and health number.

The 10 Principles of Privacy

Our Privacy Policy reflects our compliance with fair information practices, applicable laws and standards of practice.

1. Accountability

We take our commitment to securing patient privacy very seriously. Each physician and employee associated with the Practice is responsible for the personal information under his/her control. Our employees are informed about the importance of privacy and receive information periodically to update them about our Privacy Policy and related issues.

2. Identifying Purposes: Why We Collect Information

We ask you for information to establish a relationship and serve your medical needs. We obtain most of our information about you directly from you, or from other health practitioners whom you have seen and authorized to disclose to us. You are entitled to know how we use your information and this is described in the Privacy Statement posted at The Centre for Family Medicine. We will limit the information we collect to what we need for those purposes, and we will use it only for those purposes. We will obtain your consent if we wish to use your information for any other purpose.

3. Consent

You have the right to determine how your personal health information is used and disclosed. For most health care purposes, your consent is implied as a result of your consent to treatment, however, in all circumstances express consent must be written.

Your written Consent will be forwarded to the Privacy Officer who will document the request in patient’s medical records and notify appropriate Health care providers and their supporting staff.

Patients who have withdrawn consent to disclose PHI must sign and date the Consent to Withdrawal Form. It is understood that the consent directive applies only to the PHI which the patient has already provided, and not to PHI which the patient might provide in the future:

PHIPA permits certain collections, uses, and disclosures of the PHI, despite the consent directive; healthcare providers may override the consent directive in certain circumstances, such as emergencies; and the consent directive may result in delays in receiving health care, reduced quality of care due to healthcare provider’s lacking complete information about the patient, and healthcare provider’s refusal to offer non-emergency care.

Your written Consent to Withdrawal Form will be forwarded to the Privacy Officer who will document the request in patient’s medical records and notify appropriate Health care providers and their supporting staff.

4. Limiting Collection

We collect information by fair and lawful means and collect only that information which may be necessary for purposes related to the provision of your medical care.

5. Limiting Use, Disclosure and Retention

The information we request from you is used for the purposes defined. We will seek your consent before using the information for purposes beyond the scope of the posted Privacy Statement.

Under no circumstances do we sell patient lists or other personal information to third parties. There are some types of disclosure of your personal health information that may occur as part of this Practice fulfilling its routine obligations and/or practice management. This includes consultants and suppliers to the Practice, on the understanding that they abide by our Privacy Policy, and only to the extent necessary to allow them to provide business services or support to this Practice.

We will retain your information only for the time it is required for the purposes we describe and once your personal information is no longer required, it will be destroyed. However, due to our on-going exposure to potential claims, some information is kept for a longer period.

Patients may be required to sign and date a Consent to Disclose PHI Form and pay a fee based on current OMA rates prior to release of information.

6. Accuracy

We endeavour to ensure that all decisions involving your personal information are based upon accurate and timely information. While we will do our best to base our decisions on accurate information, we rely on you to disclose all material information and to inform us of any relevant changes.

7. Safeguards: Protecting Your Information

We protect your information with appropriate safeguards and security measures. The Practice maintains personal information in a combination of paper and electronic files. Recent paper records concerning individuals’ personal information are stored in files kept onsite at our office. Older records may be stored securely offsite.

Access to personal information will be authorized only for the physicians and employees associated with the Practice, and other agents who require access in the performance of their duties, and to those otherwise authorized by law.

We provide information to health care providers acting on your behalf, on the understanding that they are also bound by law and ethics to safeguard your privacy. Other organizations and agents must agree to abide by our Privacy Policy and may be asked to sign contracts to that effect. We will give them only the information necessary to perform the services for which they are engaged, and will require that they not store, use or disclose the information for purposes other than to carry out those services.

Our computer systems are password-secured and constructed in such a way that only authorized individuals can access secure systems and databases.

If you send us an e-mail message that includes personal information, such as your name included in the "address", we will use that information to respond to your inquiry. Please remember that e-mail is not necessarily secure against interception. If your communication is very sensitive, you should not send it electronically unless the e-mail is encrypted or your browser indicates that the access is secure.

8. Openness: Keeping You Informed

The Practice has prepared this plain-language Privacy Policy to keep you informed. You may view a copy by visiting our website at

If you have any additional questions or concerns about privacy, we invite you to contact us by phone and we will address your concerns to the best of our ability.

9. Access and Correction

With limited exceptions, we will give you access to the information we retain about you within a reasonable time, upon presentation of a written request and satisfactory identification.

We may charge you a fee for this service and if so, we will give you notice in advance of processing your request.

If you find errors of fact in your personal health information, please notify us as soon as possible and we will make the appropriate corrections. We are not required to correct information relating to clinical observations or opinions made in good faith. You have a right to append a short statement of disagreement to your record if we refuse to make a requested change.

If we deny your request for access to your personal information, we will advise you in writing of the reason for the refusal and you may then challenge our decision.

10. Challenging Compliance

We encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns you might have about your privacy or our Privacy Policy. We will investigate and respond to your concerns about any aspect of our handling of your information.

BipolarLab был основан как исследовательская лаборатория Dr. Yanni Malliaris, B.Sc., P.hD в Institute of Psychiatry, King's College в 2002 году и утвердился в день святого Валентина в Афинах, /Греция/ в 2011 году.

Bipolar disorder is a condition characterized by recurrent episodes of depression and/or abnormally elevated mood (known as mania) that interfere with psychosocial functioning (see our guide). Depressive symptoms, along with cognitive difficulties in planning, problem solving, attention and memory, are known to be related to low psychosocial functioning and in particular occupational functioning (Bauer et al., 2001; Goldstein & Burdick, 2008).

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental disorder that disrupts the emotional and social lives of people who suffer from it.

Patients with bipolar disorder experience intense periods of mania, where they tend to feel over optimistic or even grandiose, and often become overly social or even inappropriate in their contact with other people. This is something they usually regret and feel ashamed of later, but they have little control over their behavior when they are manic. They also tend to experience periods of depression, where they become withdrawn and isolate themselves. When they do not experience a mood episode, they tend to be fairly well and very likable and cherish the friendship of others, but the effects of their previous episodes persist. The mood episodes disrupt their social lives, and as a result they are often isolated. The lack of a supportive network of friends makes their lives even more difficult to bear, increases their risk to become unwell again, and delays their recovery.

Our BipolarLab eBuddy program aims to develop a network of BipolarLab eBuddies who will volunteer their time to befriend at least one bipolar patient who will be undergoing supervised treatment by a BipolarLab professional.

Bipolar disorder has been found to be “the sixth most disabling medical condition”(Murray & Lopez, 1997). Bipolar patients often have other medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease and both depression and mania are phases that are associated with significant problems in activity. Therefore, one cannot help but realize the need to look into more depth the complex relationship between physical activity and bipolar disorder. Even though many studies in the past have tried to look at this relationship, it is only recently that advances in accelerometer technologies are beginning to help us to measure accurately activity patterns in bipolar disorder.

Our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

We have been keeping busy with our clinical work and service development in Greece. We have many new developments for our international audience for 2012! Among the most notable our specialist Cognitive Behavior Therapy CBT programme and our new Free Bipolar Chemistry Meetings

We wish you all a happy and healthy 2012 and we look forward to meeting you through our wee bipolar chemistry meetings!

...our wee first meeting!

We love the work we do, and we believe that we provide great specialist bipolar care that it will be very difficult for you to find online or locally - even in a great academic centre.

We also understand that the programs we have available may appear too complex or daunting to understand just by reading our information sheets. Indeed, some of our first patients were Doctors and Professors. You don't have to be a Professor to benefit from our clinical care!

We want to make sure that you really know what we can do for you and how we may be able to help you.

Getting your bipolar care over the web may be new to you, so this would be your chance to see what it feels like, and whether it is right for you.

We also know that having the right "chemistry" with our team is vital for both of us to make this work. Maybe we will like each other, maybe we won't.

We can always try.

So if you want to meet with us, and to clarify any questions you may have, we are happy to provide a first Bipolar Chemistry Meeting at no cost to you. This is not going to be a consultation or a clinical evaluation of your condition, but more of a meeting where you briefly get to know us a bit better, and chat about our programmes and your concerns.

We can answer in detail all questions you may have about our clinical care and we can decide together what's good for you.

We know that you will respect our time and effort, and you will make the best use of your free Bipolar Chemistry Meeting.

We look forward to talking with you.

1. What is the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Programme?

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a specialist psychological treatment for people who experience difficulties with their emotional health. The CBT model focuses on the role of our thinking and behavior in maintaining our emotional health. It is the psychotherapy with the best empirical evidence base for the treatment of mood disorders (bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety). The aim of the therapy is to alleviate acute episodes of depression, hypomania and anxiety states and also to prevent the occurrence of new mood episodes.

2. What does it offer?

• Clinical and psychological evaluation; formulation of psychosocial history

• Psycho-education on mood disorders

• Training on the CBT model of mood disorders

• Training on effective mood and symptom monitoring methods

• Development of coping skills that help to manage early warning signs of relapse

• Development of coping skills that help to manage negative and stressful events, anxiety states, sleep difficulties, and social and work routines

• Treatment of dysfunctional thoughts, attitudes, core-beliefs, and other behaviors that trigger and maintain emotional disorders

• Treatment of depression, hypomania, anxiety and prevention of new episodes (depression, mania, psychosis)

• Improvement of social and work functioning and emotional well-being.

CBT therapy provides an opportunity to people with bipolar disorder and depression to achieve stability in their life and to improve their functioning by acquiring effective coping skills. It has a solid evidence base provided by many treatment trials conducted at specialist academic centers across the world (two of the most notable trials have been conducted at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London by Prof. Dominic Lam studies and Harvard university in the STEP-BD trial)

3. What it cannot do?

Patients who are not willing or able to consent to this treatment and carry out the required homework cannot benefit by CBT therapy. In most circumstances patients also need to be on medication. Patients who are currently manic cannot participate in or benefit by CBT therapy.

4. How it works?

You first need to book an initial consultation with a BipolarLab mental health professional. In the meeting you will be given information about the programme, its objectives and rules of operation. Then we will discuss your current problems and circumstances and review your mental health history. You will be asked to complete one brief questionnaire that will have questions about your mood and personality. In order to start it is important that you are not in a current crisis (especially in a manic episode) but of course you may have some symptoms. The meetings take place over the internet or on the phone once a week at a fixed pre-scheduled time and last for one hour (60 minutes).

The programme that offers both cognitive and behavioral therapy lasts for approximately 30 weeks/sessions. A shorter programme that offers only behavioral therapy for depression lasts only 12 weeks/sessions (Behavior Activation Therapy). And finally the CBT programme that focuses only on your early warning signs and your relapse prevention plan lasts for 4 weeks/sessions.

5. Who conducts the CBT therapy?

Dr Yanni Malliaris is the primary CBT therapist. Dr Malliaris has studied and worked with leading clinical psychologists in the field of CBT therapy of mood disorders. Two of the most important were Professor Dominic Lam at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London (the father of CBT therapy for Bipolar disorder) and Professor Ivar Lovaas at UCLA (the father of Behavior therapy for autism). Other important clinical psychologists that he has studied with who have also influenced his work include Professor Kevin Power (Stirling university), Professor Constance Hammen (UCLA), and Professor Chris Brewin (UCL).

6. How do you know it works?

We know it works because all our services are based on well funded data-driven research that has demonstrated the effectiveness of each intervention. This research has also been published in peer-reviewed journals, which means that the quality of the work has been under strict scientific evaluation. We use the same protocols, measures and procedures that have been used in important clinical trials. We always aim to achieve the same or even better results.
