1. What is this about? Light therapy—or phototherapy, classically referred to as heliotherapy—consists of exposure to daylight or some equivalent form of light as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD), major depression and depression in bipolar disorder. By affecting the body's circadian rythms it can help both with mood and sleep problems with little or no side effects. This can be used in combination with medications or without. It is usually effective after a month of 20-30 daily exposures. We use a treatment protocol that it is especially tailored to the needs of patients with bipolar disorder. This treatment is best combine with our day care or residential treatment programme that allow us to have daily contact and time for other rewarding activities. For patients who can purchase our recommended bright light equipment, we can deliver this therapy remotely too.
